Cathy Irons (violin), Vyvyan Yendoll (viola) and Tomas Hurnik (cello) perform a concert in Akaroa as part of their Chamber Music New Zealand tour.

Their performance includes Schubert's much-loved Trio Movement, Beethoven's Op 9 no 2 and Haydn's D major Trio op 32. They also bring to the stage a delightful and effervescent trio by the lesser known classical Moravian composer, Wranitzky - an established composer in Vienna and a contemporary of Haydn's.

The lyrical and sonorous Easter Melancholy by Anthony Ritchie, was commissioned by the trio for a performance in 2011, and uses modal scales to evoke moods and feelings. The concert is brought to a bright bold conclusion with the vibrant Dohnanyi Serenade; this time the trio display their full rich sound, with brilliance and energy.

Tres Cordes are members of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra where Tomas and Vyvyan are associate principals of their sections, and Cathy plays first violin.

They bring a fresh musical approach to classical music. Using minimal vibrato and blending their sound together,Tres Cordes String Trio create a luminous resonance which gives the music life and purity.

Tres Cordes string trio has been performing together since 2007, and are all members of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. The trio has a passion for chamber music which they have shared with audiences around South Island as well as broadcasting live on CTV. They were invited to the Nelson Composers Workshop in 2011, to perform and work alongside NZ composers. They released their first CD “String Trio Sapphires” which was broadcast on Radio New Zealand Concert as the competition CD of the week, and has been subsequently regularly broadcast.
