Tumutumu is a new solo dance work by Louise Pōtiki Bryant, made in collaboration with Richard Nunns. Tumutumu combines Louise’s unique performance and dance style with innovative video design, and an original soundscape by Paddy Free and Richard Nunns. The tumutumu is a traditional Māori percussion instrument - a taonga puoro - which can be made from various types of stone including pounamu, or from other materials such as wood and bone.

The tumutumu is very much a South Island instrument of the Ngai Tahu people, used particularly in whare wananga (houses of learning) to accompany intoned learnings. Louise is accompanied live by Richard Nunns in her performance.

In an exploration of the process of learning on a physical, mental and spiritual level, Louise also integrates the playing of several different tumutumu, within her choreography. Tumutumu has an ethereal other-worldly quality and is inspired by the different rhythms, tones and kaupapa of the tumutumu instruments.
