Possibly the most intriguing concert in the Encore series is by mid seventies legendary group ‘Waves’ who have recently re-released their debut album on both vinyl and CD. Formed at a time in the mid-seventies when many of New Zealand’s most loved bands were just coming together, like Hello Sailor and Split Ends (later to become Enz), Waves produced some of the most intelligent and masterly music of that period.

Waves were an acoustic band built around the compositional skills of Graeme Gash, David Marshall and Kevin Wildman. Their acoustic harmonizing resulted in a self titled album recorded at Stebbings studios’ (the Abbey Road of the NZ industry of that period) and was one of the best selling albums of the mid 70’s before going out of print. According to NZ music luminary Trevor Reekie “It is a timeless Kiwi album of its genre. Waves disbanded in 1977. It’s nice to see this slice of history back.” (NZ Musician magazine)

The album became a collector’s item and at their peak the band played such venues as the Auckland Town Hall, His Majesty’s Theatre, Maidment theatre (with none other than a young Neil Finn in support) and the Mercury, with such bands as Splt Enz and Tole Puddle.

Now back to play as part of the encore series Waves play the concert as a double bill with Andrew White who has a huge reputation in his own right and international profile as an acoustic guitar innovator, to quote Tommy Emmanuel "Andrew is a magical writer, listen to him with your heart.”. Andrew has toured and collaborated with the likes of Clannad, the Corrs, Mary Black, Taj Mahal and local harmonica ace Brendan Power. He is set to release a new album on the international label ‘Candyrat records’.

Last year the Titirangi Festival ran a series of concerts to celebrate the contribution of the Titirangi theatre to the local arts community, before it moved to new temporary premises along Portage rd.
The event, called the ‘Encore series’ was so successful the festival team have decided to run another series this October.

Here is the Encore programme:
Fri 11th sees the return of festival favourites ‘Bluetrain’ joined by the incomparable vocalist Cherie Mathieson (Sola Rosa / Mark de Clive Lowe).
Sat 10th legendary 70’s acoustic band ‘Waves’ will perform a very rare concert in a double bill with the internationally recognized master acoustic guitar player Andrew White.
Fri 18th in a night dubbed the ‘Monster Blues Night’, with Swamp Thing (featuring none other than Michael Barker from the John Butler trio) Dave Alley trio , slide guitarist Dean ‘Honeyboy’ Morris and young bluesmen 'His Masters voice'.
Sat 19th the ‘Celebration of the voice’ concert. The night features two choirs, the ‘Grey Lynn community choir’, the ‘Voice Club’ and a special performance by Carolina Moon presenting songs of ancient Judeo Spain from her ‘Mother Tongue’ album with guitarist Nigel Gavin and sax player Roger Manins. Titirangi's own ‘Fringe ukes’ will also make an appearance.
Tickets are extremely limited for these special concerts and are available through the Titirangi Pharmacy and online through Eventfinder.
