According to the New Zealand Heart Foundation, cardiovascular disease (heart disease, stroke and blood vessel disease) is still the leading cause of death in New Zealand, accounting for 40% of deaths annually. A recent study from the US points to a surprisingly easy, natural prevention method.

This recently published study found that people who regularly practice Transcendental Meditation (TM) have 48% less deaths, heart attacks and strokes. The resulting report published by the American Heart Association, is a huge step forward in the evolution of medical practice - informing physicians which alternative approaches to lowering blood pressure have been shown by research to be effective.

"This is an important breakthrough as it is the first time that the Transcendental Meditation technique has been recognised and recommended by a national medical organisation that provides professional practice guidelines to physicians and policymakers," said Dr Robert Schneider, Director of the Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention and one of the study’s authors.

This prominent American researcher is coming to New Zealand in October to explain the health benefits of this meditation practice. Dr Schneider will give presentations to doctors and to the public in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch from 6 – 9 October.

“I wish to tell New Zealand doctors why the American Heart Association is now recommending TM”, said Dr Schneider from his home in Iowa, USA. “My message to the public is simple. Learn TM to lower high blood pressure and reduce heart disease”.

With an alarming one in eighteen New Zealand adults (over 193,000) being diagnosed with coronary heart disease, this message couldn’t come at a better time for Kiwis. The New Zealand Heart Foundation website claims that every 90 minutes a New Zealander dies from coronary heart disease, so what ever can be done to reduce this, the better.

The benefits go beyond heart health too. Dr Nick Argyle, a psychiatrist and previous Clinical Director of Mental Health for Auckland DHB, whose background is in both conventional and alternative medicine in Cambridge, London, New York, Australia and Auckland, will be hosting the Auckland leg of Dr Robert Schneider’s tour.

A proficient researcher and speaker in his own right, Dr Nick Argyle is thrilled to have a global expert share his wisdom and findings with both the medical industry and public in New Zealand. He backs up Dr Robert Schneider’s views, adding “Learning TM is the single best way to make your lifestyle healthier.”
