A 50 Year Anniversary of The Beatles playing the Auckland Town Hall

On Tuesday 24th June and Wednesday 25th June 1964 the Auckland Town Hall stage was graced by The Beatles, belting out tunes to hundreds of hysterical fans. To mark the 50th Anniversary since The Beatles played, Play It Strange Trust and The EDGE are delighted to announce a very special two-night celebration ‘A Strange Day’s Night’ at Auckland Town Hall next month.

Hundreds of artists including Tim Finn, Graham Brazier, SJD, Jordan Luck, Fiona McDonald and many more pop masters will be performing. In keeping with the philosophy of Play It Strange, those artists will share the stage with hundreds of school student performers who have been rehearsing their chosen Beatle’s song in the lead up to the shows. Each night will have a different line up as Beatles hits spanning 6 years are performed and all funds raised will go to Play It Strange.

Mike Chunn, CEO of the Play It Strange Trust and true Beatles fan describes the upcoming event as a monumental celebration of a globally recognised repertoire.

“It was amazing when artists were asked to choose two songs each from the Beatles catalogue, there were very few “double-ups”. This is recognition of how numerous and vast their songs were. And they span the generations.”

One student was asked if she knew any Beatles songs and her reply was that she knew every song from their "No 1" album of chart topping tracks, remarked Chunn.

Play It Strange was set up in 2003 to shine a spotlight on young people and their songs. It runs several secondary school songwriting competitions as well as the Jam Bus mobile recording studio through Auckland primary schools. It has also had Band Of Strangers Concerts over the years (based on a concept of Neil Finn’s) whereby young artists share the stage with established recognised musicians.
A Strange Day’s Night will embrace this concept whilst singing the praises of the Beatles visit to NZ and unwavering popularity.

A Strange Day’s Night will take place on 24th and 25th June 2014 at Auckland Town Hall.

Ticket prices are $19.50 and $49.00 + booking fee. Tickets are on sale for both evenings via Ticketmaster
