Brief outline of course:
This course is about connecting the actor to their emotional impulses. Often from the pressures of performing we begin to lose connection with the actual impulse that is generated when we allow ourselves to arrive fully open emotionally to the impulse generated by the writing. With this way of working we look to trigger our own spontaneous reaction to the material and reconnect to that original impulse. Ways to avoid patterns creeping in that restrict this spontaneity. This means we are free to be improvising emotionally whilst still on script.
Juliet starts with monologue so that the impulse work can become independent from working off a partner as in the audition room often there is no one to bounce your performance off. Actors need to be able to bounce off their own impulses. This will give them creative independence and power.
Participants need to have memorised two monologues to do this process (monologues can be supplied if necessary).
You’ll Need: to bring lunch both days. Also pen and paper and your memorised scenes to work on in class.
We Supply: morning and afternoon tea.
The Tutor: Juliet Furness
In 1992, Juliet left NZ on the invitation of Jeremiah Comey, a top LA acting coach (clients from Avatar, The Twilight Saga, Fight Club and Titanic) to be assistant tutor at his Film Acting studio in Los Angeles.
Just under a year later she moved to New York to investigate stage techniques. There she studied with many top industry professionals as well as forging her own career as an actress.
She was lucky enough in 1995 to stumble upon Seth Barrish – Anne Hathaway’s private coach – whose methods she would return to again and again during the many years she lived there. Having spent a total of 17 years acting, studying and teaching in New York and LA, Juliet returned home to New Zealand with what she considers are acting methods that are among the best that the industry has to offer.
She has also taught private classes since arriving back in New Zealand and is thrilled to be able to see the ideas put to practical use. During the time classes have been going she has had three students under her tuition land roles on Shortland Street, one of which was a core cast.
