West African drum class, suitable for beginners and intermediate players.
Learn how to play hand drumming on African djembe drums. Wonderful rhythms and clear instruction to create a powerful sound together and have lots of fun! Learn from Simon Elwell, who has drummed for 6 years with Julian Raphael of COmmunity Music Junction. Simon also learnt inspiring and uplifting African rhythm and music face to face from several drumming Masters and percussionists including Mohamed Bangoura, King Marong, Chris Berry and has been influenced by the teachings of Mamedy Keita, Babara Bngoura and Fara Tolno.

Simon has been teaching and facilitating drumming groups in and around Wellington for Community Music Junction since 2011, performs regularly with the percussion ensemble Nimba, leads the drumming for Lala's Thursday dance class and is currently studying the magical sound of the Mbira.

Play your own drum or use one of ours, drum hire also available to take a drum home with you.

$15 per class or $10 unwaged, but it's cheaper to pay for the series! $50 for fours classes, or $35 unwaged.
