New Zealand Symphony Orchestra/The New Zealand Opera Chapman Tripp Chorus

Embrace this opportunity to see an exceptional contemporary opera by the “saviour of classical music.” - (The New York Times).

Writer Federico García Lorca is now considered one of Spain’s greatest icons, but in 1936, at the start of the Spanish Civil War, he found himself in front of a firing squad at Ainadamar (“fountain of tears” in Arabic). Lorca’s muse Margarita Xirgu conjures up his dramatic life and tragic death in this powerful opera by Grammy Award-winning composer Osvaldo Golijov. Singers from the award-winning recording – Kelley O’Connor, Jessica Rivera and Jesus Montoya – along with Leanne Kenneally and James Clayton star in the Festival’s semi-staged production, conducted by Miguel Harth-Bedoya and directed by Sara Brodie.

“Golijov is a huge talent, with limitless possibilities in front of him.” - The New Yorker

“Golijov's works jump off the stage with exuberant rhythm and passionate song.” - The New York Times
