Ukulele Master A.J. Leonard is returning to New Zealand with his cello playing partner Jenny Rowlands. On their recent east coast tour of Australia they launched their tenth album Soft Lights And Sweet Music in front of capacity crowds. Recent performances have also included their bold and innovative take on The Beatles Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Ukes Club Band.

When A.J. Leonard started playing ukulele in 1974 in Melbourne, there were very few players in Australia. However he was lucky to encounter one of the veterans of the ukulele hey-day of the 1920’s who taught him specialist techniques as well as an appreciation of the instruments true potential. In 2006 AJ visited Hawaii to purchase a new uke and whilst there sowed the seeds for what was to become his first ukulele-based album, Tales From the Tropics.

Jenny Rowlands is a classically trained cellist who has embraced other musical genres with her typical flair. Together they have developed a rapport, becoming known for their ukulele/cello interplay exhibited in such pieces as The Pink Bond Theme, Baby Elephant Gunn and Eleanor Rigby. The simpatico they share is like that of the synapses of the same brain. Unbelievable! Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see them perform.

AJ and Jenny will be offering a ukulele workshop prior to their concert at 6pm - Workshop only costs $20 and Concert/Workshop package $30 (free pizza will be provided by the Hawkes Bay Ukulele Underground for those attending the workshop)
