Art In a Garden Celebrates Ten Years!
Considered the best indoor outdoor exhibition of its kind in the South Island, the garden provides an elegant setting for established and emerging artists to display and sell their work. Sculptures sit with pride amidst trees, lawns, ponds and rose gardens while paintings, glassware, jewellery and pottery are exhibited in the restored farm barn gallery.
Live music filters through the gardens creating an unhurried air and a stream side café serves picnic lunches with wine and coffee.
Art classes for children are available and there is an art quest to amuse them whilst you wander the gardens.
Art in a Garden is held every spring at Flaxmere near Hawarden, an hour’s drive north from Christchurch. The road north passes through the grape growing district of Waipara before turning inland towards the limestone escarpments of the Weka Pass and the farmlands of the Waikari basin. From Waikari the road heads west to Hawarden and Flaxmere via the Lake Sumner road. Flaxmere, a garden of National Significance sits on the river bed terraces of the Waitohi River, it has been forty seven years in the making.
