Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra
Newstalk ZB Presents Remembering WWI

Eckehard Stier - Conductor
George Henare - Actor
Jenny Wollerman - Soprano

Satie: Parade
Debussy: Berceuse héroïque
Vaughan Williams: The Lark Ascending
Berg: Three Fragments from Wozzeck
Ravel: La Valse

In our second Newstalk ZB ‘Remembering’ concert, we present the vastly different visions of five of the great modern composers of the era, all struggling to hold on to their culture in the face of a forever altered world.

Debussy’s Berceuse héroïque and Vaughan Williams’s The Lark Ascending are testaments to beauty in the wake of horror. Satie’s Parade is a joyful surrealist romp, while Ravel’s La Valse and Berg’s Three Fragments from Wozzeck take familiar musical styles such as the waltz and march, and deconstruct them to create something wildly different, reflecting the way the world around them had been deconstructed by the war.
