13 December 2014 marks the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of the River Plate, which was the first naval battle of the Second World War and the only episode of the War to take place in South America. The battle involved the German cruiser, Admiral Graf Spee, and the Royal Navy South American squadron, consisting of HM Ships Ajax, Exeter and Achilles- the latter being manned by 312 Royal New Zealand Navy personnel.

It was a clear victory for the Allied navies and the Battle of the River Plate is a key moment in the history of NZ- over 60% of the sailors and officers who were aboard HMS Achilles at the battle were New Zealanders. This battle served to prove the fortitude and efficacy of New Zealand naval forces, prior to the formation of the Royal New Zealand Navy in 1941.

Our commemorations will take place throughout 13-14 Dec. Our Street Parade down Auckland's Queens Street is a re-enactment of the 582 ships company's of HMS Achilles, who made a proud march up Queens Street on return to New Zealand after this battle.

Start: Aotea Square at 1100
582 current serving sailors and officers of the Royal New Zealand Navy will march down Queens Street and past Britomart, finishing at Queens Wharf.

We honour those that served during the Battle, and remember those who passed, as we commemorate the history of our Navy.

Members of the public are warmly encouraged to support our Street March.
