Beethoven's 5th piano concerto was the last concerto he completed. It is dedicated to the Archduke Rudolph, a fervent admirer of Beethoven's music, a generous benefactor and close friend. It was the only piano concerto not to be performed in public by Beethoven, who was finding performing increasingly difficult due to the deterioration of his hearing.

Premiered in 1811, the concerto quickly gained the nick name 'Emperor' in recognition of its grand and noble gestures and stately character. Performing this extraordinary work, we are delighted to welcome back pianist Michael Endres.

Sampo Haapamäki is one of the new generation of Finnish composers. In 2004 he won the Gaudeamus Prize for his piece Signature, an award considered to be the most prestigious in international composition circles. Characterised by a powerful rhythmic energy, Signature places considerable virtuosic demands upon the performers.

Beethoven's 8th symphony was completed during the summer of 1812. Perhaps influenced by the season, this symphony is considered the most lighthearted and humorous of all his symphonic compositions. It maintains a delicate balance throughout of grace, richness and exhuberance.
