“Bella Kalolo joins The Whitireia Soul School for a music performance not to be missed”
Whitireia music students are thrilled to have Bella Kalolo joining them on stage for an amazing Soul Revue show on Thursday 18 September, 8pm at The James Cabaret, 5 Hania Street, Wellington.
Whitireia provides its music students with some of the best practical musical experiences. Students and graduates have previously worked with the likes of Warren Maxwell (Little Bushman, Trinity Roots), Karl Steven (Supergroove, Drab Doo Riffs) and Barnaby Weir (The Black Seeds, Fly My Pretties) for their ‘Big Gig’ annual show.

Bella Kalolo won the 2012 and 2014 Best Female Artist at the Vodafone Pacific Music Awards. Her voice is often compared to American diva Aretha Franklin. Bella brings her wealth of knowledge to the students from performing in the Lion King stage show to the Glastonbury Festival to the invitation to perform with Chaka Khan at her show in the Sydney Domain to over 60,000 people.

As Radio New Zealand music critic Nick Bollinger puts it: "she comes across like one of James Brown's funky divas.... capturing that feeling with as much authenticity as a retro-soulster like Sharon Jones."

In line with previous years, Bella Kalolo will be coproducing with music tutors from the Whitireia music programmes including, George Packard (Elena, Hot Cafe, Chamber Music New Zealand, Baulkanistas), Jim Perkins (David Grace, The Geof Culverwell trio, Andrew Tosh), Rick Cranson (Little Bushman, James Illingworth Trio), Phil Hornblow (Vision Studios, The Dave Feehan Band), Caleb Robinson (Little Bushman, Iva Lamkum, James Illingworth Trio). Lighting, sound and technical support will be provided by students from the Whitireia Live Sound and Event Production programme led by sound engineer, Kevin Whooley.

This year 54 students from the Whitireia Bachelor of Applied Arts (Music), Certificate in Rock, Jazz and Commercial Music and Live Sound and Event Production programmes will participate in the Soul Revue show, all performing in various roles from front of house, stage management and music performance.

Come and support the next generation of Aotearoa’s professional musicians and be treated to an amazing night of soul music to tantalise your ears.
