Wellington’s annual Birdman event includes a humorous competition to see who has the most creative attempt at “flying” into the harbour off the wharf. Prize categories include recycling, whales, and creative costume. Everybody is welcome, the more creative the better.
There is a Birdkidz competition with prizes for the kids at 11am, jumping in costume at water level in the harbour.
Birdman also features an extensive market, lots of food stalls, kids’ activities area and rides, and two music stages. Our whole beautiful waterfront (weather permitting!) comes alive with fun activities for all ages and tastes.
The concert stage in Frank Kitts Park amphitheatre features an excellent selection of our top local performers. Big bands (and we mean big!), small bands, and even a 10CC tribute choir, provide variety throughout the day. The smaller stage on Te Papa Promenade (wharf) features a café environment, deck chairs, and relaxing sounds to soak up the sun with.
Daddy Cool and the Soul Sisters, a father-and-daughters ensemble, lead the entertainment on the small stage, well backed up by versatile band “In Like Flynn” and duo “River Folks”.
The kids’ activities area provides a range of fun games and creative activities for the little ones, including “cardboardboxland”, and a recycled bottle bowling alley.
Cycling is now officially classed as flying! Cyclists have a range of activities on Odlins Plaza, including trying your hand at the new and unique game of bike polo, followed by a tournament for all comers at 3pm. There will be games for all levels of player, and bikes, helmets and mallets are available. Bike enthusiasts and collectors are invited to bring their vintage, interesting or just plain stylish bikes along to display in the racks for everyone to have a look at. Kids are also included in the fun stuff; there will be a “Wheels Adventure Course” for the little cyclists and scooterists to enjoy.
