Birth of the Cool is a 1957 compilation album by American jazz musician Miles Davis featuring the rather unusual instrumentation of the traditional bop quintet (saxophone, trumpet, bass, drums, piano) augmented with baritone saxophone, trombone, French horn, and tuba. The music consisted of innovative arrangements influenced by classical music techniques such as polyphony, and marked a major development in post-bebop jazz. As the title implies, these recordings are considered seminal in the history of cool jazz.

In this lunchtime concert, an NZSM ensemble led by lecturer Dr Dave Lisik, will recreate the lineup of musicians and present several of these original compositions. Details of the players and programme will be added here when confirmed.
