“Please God, make me straight.”
It’s not easy being young, brown and gay – especially when God and your mother are watching.

Black Faggot the runaway sensation of the 2013 Auckland Fringe is returning to Auckland a year after its premiere with a plethora of awards, accolades and success both nationally and internationally notched on their belt.

The latest reviews from the Wellington International Arts Festival are out and Black Faggot has had some of the best:

"Their manner and style of presentation is engaging and infectious and their ability to morph from one character to another - gay, straight, male, female - makes this a most entertaining piece of theatre." - Dominion Post

“Performed with a light touch that belies the profound truths that surface... The language is rich, natural and powerful. The action plays out in a seamless flow, perfectly paced to generate laughter and pack a great wallop when needed.... Black Faggot needs to be seen around the whole country” - Theatreview

Written by award-winning Samoan-Kiwi playwright Victor Rodger in response to the Destiny Church protest around New Zealand’s Civil Union Bill, the show was a sold-out hit of the Auckland Fringe, winning five awards including a coveted slot in the Melbourne Fringe Festival where they won two awards for Innovation in Theatre and Innovation in Cultural Diversity.

Black Faggot will make you laugh, cry and believe in the power of love as characters played by Iaheto Ah Hi and Taofia Pelesasa collide in a series of hilarious and poignant monologues. From a camp closeted member of the Destiny Church, to an Island Mama whose beloved son turns out to be gay.

“The two performers, Iaheto Ah Hi and Taofia Pelesasa, have a terrific rapport, impeccable timing, and revel in wrong footing prejudice at every point.” - The Age, Melbourne

“Presented with simplicity, humanity, utter conviction and remarkable insight.” - GayNZ.com

Filthy, funny, raw and emotional, Black Faggot is taking the world by storm.

(Black Faggot will also be performed as part of the New Zealand Festival in Wellington from Tue 25 Feb – Sat 1 Mar 9pm at Downstage/Hannah Playhouse. Book at Ticketek. Tickets $43 - $48 (excludes booking fee).)
