Here's another reason to come and explore Rotoroa Island this summer; a series of free specialist walks and talks. Enjoy our island hospitality and get to spend some time with our fantastic friends from Auckland Zoo plus Rotoroa Island Trust experts. You'll learn about conservation, restoration and the special social history of the island.

There is no charge for any of the tours and talks; they're added extras for people coming for a relaxing day of walking, swimming and exploring.

Creating an island sanctuary on Sunday 16 February involves a walk and talk with Auckland Zoo field conservation manager, Ian Fraser. Ian and the Zoo team have developed a comprehensive animal release programme that will see wildlife established on Rotoroa in 5-10 years; in the wild it would take 40-50 years. Ian will share some of the stewardship techniques they'll be using, from decoy birds to encourage shorebird colonies, to nest boxes, shade shelters, artificial burrows and feeding stations.

Ferry bookings can be made with 360 Discovery Cruises, either online (http://www.360discovery.co.nz/) or by calling 0800 360 3472.
