Dalecarlia Clarinet Quintet in Waikanae
The Waikanae Music Society’s concert on Sunday 6 July features a programme that is sure to delight with two of the all-time chamber music favourites, the Clarinet Quintets by Mozart and Brahms, presented by the Dalecarlia Clarinet Quintet, on tour from Sweden. These two works are the greatest clarinet quintets ever written and Waikanae is extremely lucky to be the only centre on the ensemble’s tour to have both of these wonderful works on the programme.
The Dalecarlia Clarinet Quintet features the outstanding young New Zealand clarinettist Anna McGregor. Anna completed her undergraduate degree at Auckland University before moving to Sweden to further her studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where she became the first-ever recipient of a special full-fees scholarship for a non EU student provided by the Swedish government. There is only one of these scholarships available in any one year, and Anna has been honoured to have received it for two years in a row.
With fellow student violinist, Sofie Sunnerstam, Anna formed the Antithesis Quintet. Plans to tour that quintet to New Zealand were dashed when one of the performers suffered a strain injury, but now, joined by three principal string players from the Swedish orchestra the Dalasinfoniettan, they are continuing their tour as the Dalacarlia Clarinet Quintet. One of these players is Kiwi violinist Manu Berkeljon, originally from the West Coast and now associate principal 2nd violin in the Dalasinfonietten. The other performers are violist Anders Noren, co-principal viola with the Dalasinfoniettan and Tomas Blanch who is principal cellist with the Dalasinfoniettan. All of these musicians are highly experienced in and passionate about chamber music.
The concert, in the Waikanae Memorial Hall, starts at 2.30pm. Door sales will be available or tickets can be purchased from Lush Design Gallery in Raumati, Moby Dicken's Books in Paraparaumu Beach, and from Waikanae New World.
