Te Papa is pleased to host Christchurch-based artist Darryn George for a special artist’s talk in "Ngā Toi Arts Te Papa."

Four of Darryn’s works are currently in Te Papa’s Up Front gallery. Bold in colour and graphic in effect, his paintings combine Western abstract art and Māori forms and use simple repetitive compositional elements to express a personal sense of spirituality and faith.

Exploring the spiritual through the abstract is an interest he shares with local artists Colin McCahon and Ralph Hotere, and international artists such as Barnett Newman.

Exclusive Off the Wall interview
All the time I’m bouncing back and forth between the Māori culture and what’s going on in the wharenui – that would probably be my main source in terms of the Māori side of things – but I’m always going into contemporary and modern European art as well.

Lara Strongman interviews Darryn George in the forthcoming January 2014 issue of Off the Wall – Te Papa’s free quarterly online magazine of New Zealand art commentary.
