It's come around in a hurry but this year the Island Bay Festival celebrates 30 years of community fun. Starting from small beginnings, the festival has grown to become a major event in the Wellington Summer City calendar.

This huge, free, action packed event attracts over 18,000 attendees from all over Wellington who come to enjoy the hospitality of the South Coast.

Performance artists will entertain as you stroll through the large bustling market. Sample a mix of local and international foods, as you watch the littlies enjoy the fun fair.

The Markets open at 10.00am along with the unmissable Italian Quarter which showcases Italian food and culture that is the Carnevale Italia in European street cafe style!

The Blessing of the Boats, a festival favourite, begins at 2.30pm with local ministers blessing the line up of fishing boats in this traditional ceremony to grant them safe carriage and plentiful bounties.

Shorland Park’s Band Rotunda and Beach Stage host music all day. The line up is a mixture of fresh talent, Island Bay locals and world music to listen to by the seaside. It will be a highly entertaining day of performance suitable for families, groovers and shakers.

Music Programmer James Coyle says that he tried to make something special for the 30th Anniversary, and worked with local events man and musician Barrie Hutton. "As local as possible was the goal for this year's festival," James says, "There are some acts like BIA and Dougal Spears that you won't see at any other festivals in Wellington, because they are local musicians pulling out something special for Island Bay. When I say local I mean that they live within 200m of the Band Rotunda."

So make your way to Shorland Park, Island Bay and join in the fun!
