By Unguarded Intersection in collaboration with Shuaib Memom and Akbar Hossain
March 5 - May 6, 2014
Opening Event: Tuesday 5 March, 530pm - 730pm with happy hour drinks and a welcome from the artists

Spectrum utilises aspects of gaming, popular culture and mobile storytelling to draw the audience into the unseen world of communications.

The audience member can watch the stream of stories on the screen, interact with the story by adding their own Emoji lines or press the emergency button to observe how the system manages a global apocalypse!

Digital Art Live with the support of AUT University’s School of Computer and Mathematical Sciences invited artists of the collective, Unguarded Intersection, to work with PhD students, Shuaib Memom and Akbar Hossain.

Their research focused on the management of networks especially in emergency situations. At first, this seemed an unlikely partnership; however Unguarded Intersection were surprised by the visual similarities between popular social games and technical depictions of radio frequency spectrums.

Spectrum furthers the themes of transplanted experiences which is a consistent feature of Unguarded Intersection’s work. By taking a common experience out of context, the viewer is invited to reflect on the nature of the experience itself.
