You love photography and would really like to take better shots on holiday or things that interest you whether it be family portraits, landscapes or the night sky.

Coinciding with the Auckland Festival of Photography we have scheduled a series of workshops aimed at beginners.

Whatever your photography interest, if you are a beginner at photography and just need that extra help to understand your camera equipment and how to make them work for you to produce better images then this is ideal for you. We will be running a number of Full Day Workshops (7 June 2014) and Half Day Workshops (14, 21 & 28 June and 5 July 2014)

About the workshop:
This will be a crash course for anyone wanting to kick start taking great photos quickly.
This is aimed at beginners who want to learn the basics of how to use their DSLR equipment, what the settings mean and when to use them.

The session is getting to know the nuts and bolts of camera operation followed in the afternoon by practical exercises to discover how to use what you have learned. This course will put you on the right track for creating great images.
Numbers are limited – minimum 5 people and maximum of 15 people.

Who is the course aimed at?
- This is a course for beginners who have little or no knowledge of using a DSLR. Minors under 16 are also welcome but must be accompanied by a parent or a legal guardian.

What you need to bring:
- You should have digital SLR camera or a point-and-shoot camera with manual settings
- Bring your camera accessories e.g. charger, batteries, external flash units, memory cards – let us see your complete kit to best guide you on your gear for your specific photography interests
- Don’t forget to bring your manual
- Pad and pen to take notes

The Course

Session 1:
- Brief introduction from tutor
- Participants – brief intro and what you are interested in shooting
- Camera run through – buttons, functions, terminology
- Learn about aperture control
- Learn about shutter speed
- Learn about ISO (sensor sensitivity)
- Camera accessories – we will talk about lenses, filters, flash, light modifiers, studio set-up etc
- How to see the light and use it to your advantage
- Composition and viewpoint – basic rule of thirds and telling a story in your image.
- Smartphone apps recommendations
- Post production in Lightroom - a brief intro to post photography workflow - how to improve, manipulate & generally enhance your images

Session 2 (only available as part of the Full Day Course - 7 June 2014 only)
- Practice, practice, practice.
- We will head off to the Domain and shoot using Aperture and Shutter priority to get different effects.
- We will use the surroundings and each other as subjects to shoot and experiment

Outcomes
- Hopefully you will be so inspired by the results of the day that you will be itching to get shooting and express your creativity every day.
