From the first lush swell, Eb & Sparrow cast aching crescendoes of a time long gone into a modern landscape. Singer / songwriter Ebony Lamb's lyrics are imbued with a deep strength, which meld effortlessly into melodies of heart & heartache. Likened in its unique sound to a cross between Cat Power and Gillian Welch, her voice resurrects an old time soul.

This five piece band has built a rapport with audiences from folk clubs to city bars, festivals and house concerts. They have billed with New Zealand acts such as Delaney Davidson & Marlon Williams, The Warratahs, Anika Moa, Tami Neilson and Aldous Harding, as well as supporting major internationals Rodriguez (US), Pokey LaFarge (US), Beth Orton (UK) and Wagons (Aus).

Lamb has worked tirelessly at her craft with a band that has grown organically around her, the depth of sound building with the addition of each member. Lap-steel, trumpet and electric guitars swing amongst a solid rhythm and vocal harmonies that resonanate together.

Recorded in Lyttelton by award-winning producer Ben Edwards at The Sitting Room, Eb & Sparrow’s self titled debut album is due for release September 2014.

"In these post-modem times, it’s easy to be suspicious of throwback folk music with vaudeville era aesthetics, after all, in countries like New Zealand, that was pretty much the worst time in history to be Maori, and we should judge a nation on how it treats all the people, not just some colonials with faux aires and graces.

Under this light, sonically range-roving Wellington quartet Eb & Sparrow get a pass, as even a quick cursory listen to their EP Not For Light Years suggests not a yearning for an imagined brighter past, but a desire to participate in a simpler, more humanistic way of life than the world of updates, comments and instagram images we’re up to our eyeballs in.

With singer Ebony Lamb directing proceedings with her velveteen voice and impressionistic storytelling, the rest of the band add guitar, lapsteel, bass, percussion, harmonica, drums and backing vocals to the mix, fleshing things out in a countrysidic small-town (but not small minded) fashion. The result is an easy engaging listen, one worth checking out live, and based on their past opening slots, The Unfaithful Ways and Delaney Davidson agree." - Vanguard Red Magazine - April 4th 2012
