Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects 1% to 2% of the population in New Zealand. Epilepsy is a tendency to have recurrent seizures. Seizures are caused by bursts of uncontrolled electro-chemical activity (mixed up messages) in the brain. Epilepsy is caused by some type of damage or scarring to the brain or by an inherited genetic tendency and any one, at any age, can develop epilepsy.
Epilepsy is what people with the condition have; it does not define who they are. Epilepsy is usually only a small part of their life.
