Perhaps no composer was as entranced by birdsong as Frenchman Olivier Messiaen.

In this programme of music inspired by birdsong, American conductor John Nelson leads the APO through a world of wonderful melodies, while acclaimed and innovative British pianist Joanna MacGregor performs not only Messiaen’s Oiseaux Exotiques but a mid-concert “mini recital” of ornithologically inspired solo piano pieces.

“I give bird songs to those who dwell in cities and have never heard them, make rhythms for those who know only military marches or jazz, and paint colours for those who see none.” – Messaien
