The Films in Our Lives is a fascinating three-part Screen and Media series, which is open to all members of the public who have a passion for the art of film and who wish to experience and understand different aspects of the medium through a group of informed presenters.

Dr Alistair Swale takes a warm but also unvarnished look at one of Europe’s most endearing and sometimes controversial directors, Emir Kusturica. Born in Sarajevo, now based in Belgrade, he is a self-styled Fellini who brings humour and verve to every subject he approaches. He also happens to be the founder of an annual festival based in his mountain village retreat, Kustendorf, and he is the guitarist of his long-running gypsy-inspired turbo-folk ensemble, No-Smoking Orchestra. How could someone from the former Yugoslavia have such resonance for someone living on the other side of the world? Actually, more than you’d expect. This encounter has been in many ways life-changing for the presenter, and even the members of his family. NB: This event will also feature live music.

About the Presenter: Dr Alistair Swale is a Senior Lecturer in the Screen and Media Studies Programme at the University of Waikato. His areas of expertise are: Japanese mass media and popular culture, world cinema and animation. He also has a long-standing passion for the culture and music of Central and Eastern Europe.
