Music and dance lovers will be mesmerised by the fire and grace of flamenco when Palmerston North’s Fiesta Flamenca and Wellington’s Desde Sevilla Flamenco Dance Company perform at Palmerston North’s Globe Theatre.

Their exciting production, Flamenco – The Fire of Spain, celebrates the heat and passion of flamenco that burns throughout Spain. It takes the audience on an exotic journey that explores the diverse elements of this ancient, yet evolving art form - from the vibrant fiestas of Seville and the sultry gypsy caves of Granada to the sophisticated tablaos of Madrid.

The dynamic cast of more than ten performers – guitarists, dancers, singer and percussionist – brings exciting new material to the show from recent master classes and the 2014 Festival de Jerez. Several cast members began their flamenco journey in Palmerston North with Fiesta Flamenca and, after studying the art form overseas and in Seville, went on to form the much-acclaimed Desde Sevilla Flamenco Dance Company in Wellington in 1998.

Flamenco – The Fire of Spain features these seasoned performers and showcases their talented young protégés, whose passion for flamenco has similarly been fuelled by pilgrimages to the gypsy quarters of Spain. But the real fire of flamenco comes from the synergy that sparks between the musicians, palmeros (hand- clappers), singers and dancers, driven by the pounding rhythms and the smouldering expression of human emotion.
