Comedy, skits and plenty of songs feature in Happy Hour Live - a new variety show featuring well-known New Zealand entertainer Temuera Morrison with the Modern Māori Quartet for four nights only in July.

Harking back to the glory days of television’s variety shows, Happy Hour Live is on Sunday 6, Wednesday 9, Friday 8 and Sunday 11 July at Mercury Theatre, and is the live taping of a new television show which will air on TV One later this year.

The live show features Temuera Morrison as host with the Modern Māori Quartet as the house band along with special guests, interviews with Thane Kirby, sketches, and comedian Mike King as MC. Two episodes will be taped on each night providing audiences with a two-hour show of comedy and music.
Produced by Bailey Mackey, known for The G.C, Happy Hour Live draws its inspirations from the television variety shows of the past which featured New Zealand icons The Howard Morrison Quartet, Prince Tui Teka and Billy T James.

“The show is good-natured, relaxed Kiwi fun that celebrates the strengths and personality of our home-grown talent, and allows audiences to enjoy the natural warmth and rapport they create,” Mr Mackey said.

A highlight of Happy Hour Live will be the music with the Modern Māori Quartet. Established two years ago by four Maori actors looking for work in between acting jobs, the quartet is known as hip-swaying crooners with plenty of humour. As part of the show the Modern Māori Quartet will take an iconic New Zealand song, give it a new twist and then perform it together with the original artist playing only guitar or ukulele.

Happy Hour Live host Temuera Morrison said creating a new variety show for, and about, New Zealand is an exciting prospect.

“I grew up with television variety shows and watching my uncle, Howard Morrison performing on them, and at times I even stepped in and performed with him, so I have wonderful memories of those days.”
Happy Hour Live is at Mercury Theatre on Sunday 6, Wednesday 9, Friday 11 and Sunday 13 July.
