Matariki signals the Maori New Year. A time to reflect on those who have passed; and celebrate life, culture, language and the forthcoming year.

To celebrate this occasion Te Whare Whiri Toi presents a Matariki Exhibition “Honouring Past Weavers of Muriwhenua”. This exhibition will showcase weaving by Te Hapua Traditional Arts & Crafts and Te Rarawa Marae whanau from Pukepoto.

Over 4 weeks the Matariki Exhibition will feature throughout Te Ahu. Live Exhibitions in the Atrium will demonstrate traditional weaving techniques by local Korari Weavers. Take a walk back in time through the Art Space to see historical photos and articles; through to Te Ahu Heritage Museum where a large collection of Muriwhenua weaving will be on display. To celebrate the end of the Matariki Exhibition we invite you all to join us for the Kahui Kaumatua Ball in the Main Hall. Let this be an event to wear your favourite weaving piece and enjoy the company of Kuia Kaumatua as we celebrate our people and the art of weaving.

“Honouring Past Weavers of Muriwhenua” is a tribute to those before us; who revived traditional weaving techniques, re-planted native resources and created a sense of unity within their communities through mahi raranga.
