Aucklanders will have a unique opportunity to see a performance of one of the most significant works of minimalist music of the twentieth century when members and friends of The Committee present a free performance of Terry Riley’s landmark 1964 work, In C, on Sunday 2 February. The Committee has been fortunate to secure the use of Silo 7 in Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter for the event.

Riley’s semi-aleatoric work for an unspecified number of performers has been cited as the first minimalist composition. In C has been performed and recorded numerous times by some of the world’s foremost contemporary ensembles, but has not been performed live in Auckland for at least two decades.

Silo 7 will provide the perfect setting for this performance, which will include members of The Committee and many other performers from an eclectic range of musical backgrounds, including Sophia Acheson, Kevin Kim, Margaret Cooke, Adrian Croucher, Robbie Ellis, Amelia Giles, Erikka Griffiths-Keam, Ben Hoadley, Christine Kim, Elizabeth Lau, Immi Paterson-Harkness, and John Radford amongst others. The 4pm performance of In C will be preceded by two sets of semi-structured improvisation from 3pm.

Founded in 2003, The Committee is a collective of Auckland composers which aims to present musical performances in interesting spaces; this will be its thirteenth concert. In C will represent an exciting new challenge for The Committee, which usually focuses on promoting the work of local emerging composers.
