The King of Concertos and the Queen of Symphonies

Diedre Irons first put the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 on her “to do” list when she was a student at the illustrious Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. But – after years of playing lots of other concertos in her native Canada, in the United States, and here in New Zealand – Diedre’s first opportunity to perform Brahms 2 came in 2011 when the NZSO mounted a week-long Brahms Festival (“Brahmissimo”) in Wellington. Her performance then attracted rave reviews from the critics.

Brahms 2 is one of the giants of the repertoire. It is fiendishly difficult – and emotionally incredibly powerful. Diedre has been a regular guest with Opus Orchestra. She has, in fact, performed all of the Beethoven piano concerts with Opus (works that she has also recorded for Trust Records). After performing Beethoven’s “Emperor” with Opus in 2012, Brahms seemed a logical next step. Music Director Peter Walls welcomed this idea. “This is one of my all-time favourite pieces – apart from the brilliant piano part, it is incredibly rich for the Orchestra”, he comments. “The Orchestra and our audiences are going to feel elated by this concert, I predict.”

The Piano Concerto is the culmination of a programme that begins with Haydn’s Symphony No. 85, nicknamed “La Reine” (“The Queen”) because it was the favourite of Marie Antoinette. That is followed by Brahms’s Variations on a Theme of Haydn (which, as its title suggests, is a homage to his great predecessor.

Opus performs with Diedre Irons on 20 June at 8 pm in the Gallagher Academy (Hamilton), on 21 June at 5 pm in Baycourt (Tauranga) and in the Banquet Room of the Civic Theatre Rotorua on Sunday 22 June at 3 pm
