Originally from Christchurch, Isaac Aesili is an Auckland-based multi-instrumentalist, singer, DJ and producer who specialises in trumpet.

Aesili got his start in the music industry when he joined hip-hop soul band Solaa in 1997.
Since Solaa, Aesili has also performed as a member of Opensouls and The Recloose Live Band. He has also toured as a session musician and singer with live jungle drum and bass, reggae and soul/funk groups Shapeshifter, House Of Shem, Trinity Roots, Eru Dangerspiel and The Tornadoes. At present Aesili also performs and records solo, as one half of Funkommunity and as one half of Karlmarx.

Aesili began playing music at a young age before attending St Andrew's College on a music scholarship. He also studied classical music and completed Grade 8 in the Royal School of Music program when he was fifteen.

In 1995, he was awarded best young trumpeter at the Tauranga Jazz Festival.

In 1999, Aesili started DJing. In 2007 he DJ'd at the Kiwi Party HQ in Paris for the 2007 Rugby World Cup. In 2011 he was Heineken's resident DJ for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Since 2009 he has been the resident DJ for the Heineken Open.

In 2005, Aesili attended the Red Bull Music Academy in Seattle, after which he started recording and performing solo. Through his solo material he has recorded and performed with Aaradhna, Rachel Fraser, Mara TK, Deva Mahal, Rosita Vai, Jonathan Crayford, Steph Brown and Johnny Lawrence.

In 2011 he formed Karlmarx, an electronic collaborative duo with his brother Mark McNeil. The same year, he formed Funkommunity, a collaborative duo between himself and singer Rachel Fraser. In 2012, Aesili turned Funkommunity into a five-piece band.

In 2011 he released a solo album Eye See, quickly following this up with The Karlmarx Project by Karlmarx and in 2012, Chequered Thoughts by Funkommunity.

Aesili runs his own label in New Zealand, Eye See Records, through which his projects are released locally. Internationally he has released music through Soulab Records, Melting Pot Music and Wonderful Noise.

Over the years, working solo or in other acts, Aesili has extensively toured New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Japan and Europe. Along the way he has opened for the likes of Dam Funk, Onra, Hudson Mohawke, Al Green and The Roots, and performed extensively on the local festival circuit.
