Jian Liu Piano Recital

William Byrd - Hughe Ashtons Grounde
Gubaidulina - Chaconne
Bach/Busoni - Chaconne
Beethoven - Variations Opus 34
Brahms - Paganini Variations

The Waikanae Music Society is excited to be presenting a concert by pianist Jian Liu on Sunday 31 August. Only a few years ago nobody in New Zealand knew about Jian Liu – now it seems that we can’t get enough of him. He is in great demand for solo and concerto performances around the country and superlatives such as “electrifying”, “dazzling” and “spectacular” are being used to describe his playing wherever he appears.

Jian made a huge impression on Waikanae music-lovers in 2012 when he stood in at 24 hours notice after the scheduled pianist was injured, and again in 2013 when he played with the Te Koki Trio.

Jian Liu moved to New Zealand in 2010 to become Senior Lecturer in Piano at the New Zealand School of Music. He has been honoured at numerous international competitions and has performed in prestigious concert halls around the world. Educated first at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China, he moved to the United States to continue his studies in Phoenix, Arizona, where he earned his Bachelor of Music in Piano and Bachelor of Science in Business from Arizona State University. This was followed by graduate studies at Yale School of Music where he earned a Master of Music, Master of Musical Arts and Doctor of Musical Arts.

Jian has taught at Qingdao University and at the Central Conservatory of Music in China, the School of the Arts in Singapore and at Sydney Conservatorium, as well as East Carolina University and Yale University in the United States.
The programme for his recital covers a wide range of music, from the gentle 16th century sounds of William Byrd to the modern Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina. The famous Bach/Busoni Chaconne and a set of Variations by Beethoven round out a varied programme, before the final technical showpiece, the formidably difficult Paganini Variations by Brahms, which has been described as requiring “fingers of steel, a heart of burning lava and the courage of a lion”.
According to Middle C reviewer Peter Mechen it seems that Jian Liu will have no difficulty meeting this challenge: “Jian Liu certainly had those prerequisites, engaging the work’s difficulties, both technical and interpretative, with strength, flair and purpose. Never over-flamboyant at the keyboard, his seemingly tireless fingers channelled a bewildering amalgam of complex responses and emotions into the music’s heart, realizing its brilliance, power, charm, exhilaration and tragedy”.
The concert, in the Waikanae Memorial Hall, starts at 2.30pm. Door sales will be available or tickets can be bought at Waikanae New World, Moby Dickens Books in Paraparaumu Beach, or at Lush Design Gallery in Raumati.
