On February 15th an awesome new free community event will take place at the iconic Kai Iwi lakes.

Activities provided to the public for free will include; guided snorkelling, learn to ski, waka ama, guided walks, pest workshops, dune lakes presentation and displays, spot prizes and competitions – something for everyone.

The Kai Iwi Lakes Big Day Out was inspired by the free community guided snorkel days that have been happening annually at the lakes since 2012.

"This year we have joined forces with many other stakeholders to collaborate and make the event bigger and better than ever - earning the event its new name 'The Kai Iwi Lakes Big Day Out'. A whole host of activities will be provided for free, to give people different ways to experience and learn about these world class dune lakes that we have right on our back doorstep" says event organiser Kim Jones from the Whitebait Connection.

The Kai Iwi Lakes are said to be the best dune lakes in the world and are well-known for their crystal clear water and recreational values. What a lot of people don’t know is that the lakes are home to some pretty rare and unique life such as dwarf inanga (a rare type of whitebait), Longfin Eels and Tuatara Plant. The lakes are also in pretty good knick and don’t have any pest weeds in them despite the presence of aquatic weeds in several other lakes in the area. So there is a lot to celebrate and also a lot to learn and do to help keep the lakes beautiful.

The event will run at Lake Taharoa’s Promenade Point from 10am until 3pm. Activities and workshops will be running throughout the day so grab your friends and family and come on down!
