Leadership & Crisis: How to Communicate in Critical Moments

This is the first workshop of a six-part series to be delivered bi-monthly throughout 2014. The series brings together solid academic expertise from two key research centres located at Massey University Wellington, to provide you with a multi-faceted, evidence-based toolkit for effective crisis communication. Massey’s School of Communication, Journalism & Marketing provides expertise on communication, and Massey’s Joint Centre for Disaster Research provides expertise on emergency management and the psychology of humans responding to crisis. We combine these two perspectives throughout the series, with a focus on how they apply ‘at the coal face’, then we bring in key practitioners to show how the learning is relevant for action in a range of case studies.

The February workshop focuses on crisis communication leadership. It is for those who must deliver communication leadership in a crisis, and those who must support them to do so. Taking aroha, inspired by the St Valentine’s Day course date, as our theme, our speakers from psychology, Mäori communication, disaster management, sociology, media studies, and two of New Zealand’s most experienced senior organisational communication leaders, will teach us how to love the leadership challenge and/or love helping our leaders shine, even when under pressure.
