Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 is the final concerto in a set of works dedicated to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg. Considered to be amongst some of the finest examples of instrumental writing of the Baroque period, Concerto No. 6 pays homage to the tonal richness of the violas and cellos.
Russian composer Schnittke's Concerto Grosso No. 2 brings together two of New Zealand's most outstanding performers, violinist Mark Menzies and cellist Ashley Brown. Menzies, who is based in the United States, has been described in a Los Angeles review as an "extraordinary musician" and a "riveting violinist." As well as giving many local and international performances in his role as cellist of NZTrio, Ashley Brown keeps a busy schedule of concertos, recitals, chamber concerts, recording and teaching.
