Dame Fiona Kidman speaking at the Marlborough Book Festival.

This session explores the strength, resilience and independence of Dame Fiona Kidman’s heroines, beginning with the strong and singular woman at the heart of her story of the Nova Scotian migration, The Book of Secrets. In The Captive Wife we meet Betty Guard, a real life figure who was just 14 when she became a whaler’s wife in the Marlborough Sounds in the 19th century and was still a young woman when she was kidnapped by a Maori tribe. Fiona’s latest novel The Infinite Air, tells the story of iconic aviator Jean Batten, who chose to soar above convention. “I think of those three books as forming some sort of historical trilogy,” she says. Fiona and interviewer Tessa Anderson will chat about how Fiona came upon these stories, how she was inspired by the protagonists, and the challenge of representing historical figures.
