See Tongan Acoustic Music - 2=1 Saute on Eventfinder for this event.

Matala means “the blossoming of a flower”, which is a metaphor for the blossoming of the mind, the heart, and the talents within our Tongan community.

Important themes that will be the focus of Matala 2014 are:
- The passing on of cultural heritage and knowledge
- Inter-generational relationships
- The health of the community

By bringing together Tongan families and the Tongan community, Matala will give them an opportunity to participate in the arts together, as well as to support each other.

The programme of events will feature:
- Opening ceremony with brass band
- Demonstrations and showcase of heritage arts and crafts Nima Mea’a (fine arts) by Mo'ui'aonga Tongan Cultural Centre
- A display of Tongan Tau’olunga (Tongan solo dance) by New Zealand's finest youth in traditional dancing
- Fashion showcase by Tia's Design
- Professional development forum for artists
- Matala Faikava discussions and networking throughout the day
- Music performance by one of Tonga's most well-known musicians, 'Alipate Liava'a
- Tongan acoustic music - 2=1 SAUTE "THEATRE"

Matala was started as a unique celebration of Tongan arts and culture and is now in its third year. We would like to invite you to take part in this historical event. Matala is a platform in which to create, develop, and produce new works, showcasing Tongan arts and culture to the wider community.
