Hear the story of Ngāti Toa’s world-famous haka (chant), Ka Mate, captured by Ngāti Toa film-maker Wiremu Grace in his documentary Ka Mate. The Haka. The Legend.

Wiremu’s short film Turangawaewae will also screen, and afterwards he’ll discuss how he portrays Māori cultural values through his film-making process.

About Ka Mate:
Ka Mate is the haka that the All Blacks perform to acknowledge and challenge their opponents before important matches. Its story, however, extends well beyond the rugby field. It takes us back to the great chief Te Rauparaha, a visionary leader of the Ngāti Toa iwi (tribe) in the 1800s.

Ka Mate also features in the new Te Papa exhibition Whiti Te Ra! The story of Ngāti Toa Rangatira, opening Saturday 14 June 2014.

This event is part of the 2014 Matariki Wellington Festival
