The Mercury Bay Art Escape is a self-drive Tour of artists’ studios which takes place every year over the first two weekends in March.

This popular event showcases a diverse group of established and emerging artists from a wide variety of disciplines, including painters, sculptors, jewellers, printmakers, ceramicists and weavers, in what is undoubtedly the most eclectic mix of studio artists in New Zealand.

Over 40 emerging and established local artists from Tairua to Otama open up their studios to the public from 10am – 4pm during the first two weekends in March, offering a fantastic opportunity to meet and talk to the artists, helping to understand the inspiration behind their work, while also providing a platform to purchase directly from the artistic source!

A number of excellent cafes and galleries are also involved with the Tour as “Gallery Hubs”, displaying ‘satellite exhibitions’ of work by Art Escape members, so there are plenty of opportunities for refreshment and pause along your journey while still being able to feast your eyes on a wide range of wonderful artwork.

The 2014 Tour is launched at Hot Waves Café, Hot Water Beach on Friday February 28th, featuring a showcase exhibition of all the artists involved. The exhibition is on for the duration of March and is a superb way to start your Tour experience, by seeing a comprehensive “overview” of the Art Escape members.

Many of the Art Escape members are open year-round (by appointment). All of the artists’ details are on the Art Escape website, and a comprehensive Guide is also available for purchase (including an updated supplement for 2014) which is an invaluable reference manual featuring short biographies and images of work from all of the artists involved. The Guide also provides easy-to-read maps for use during the Tour and listings for a host of cafes, galleries and B&Bs in the area. Check the Mercury Bay Art Escape website for a list of venues where you can purchase the Guide, or buy direct from our online shop.

If you are new to the area, or would prefer to have someone else worry about the roads, please contact us and we will put you in touch with one of our excellent local Tour companies who will create a personalised Art Tour for you.
