"Nikki Chooi enthralled in what would be a winning Sibelius, with blistering passion erupting from its ethereal opening pages." - NZ Herald

In 2013, Canadian violinist Nikki Chooi bewitched audiences with his performance of Sibelius in the Final of the Michael Hill International Violin Competition.

The Michael Hill, as it is affectionately known, has spawned multiple international stars including Josef Spacek, now concertmaster of the Czech Philharmonic; Joseph Lin, first violinist of the Juilliard String Quartet; and Sergey Malov, who has recently made his debut at the Berlin Philharmonie. It is one of the most demanding competitions in the business, and the winner receives $40,000, a record release with Atoll, and the most coveted prize of all - the winner's tour.

Nikki Chooi already has quite a history: he is a graduate of the Curtis Institute and is now studying at Juilliard, is a laureate of the 2012 Queen Elisabeth Violin competition, has performed at a variety of European venues including the Ravinia Festival and La Monnaie, and with a number of orchestras that range from the National Orchestra of Belgium to the Montreal Symphony.

For the 2014 Winner's Tour, Nikki joins New Zealand's most in demand international pianist Stephen De Pledge. In Hamilton the programme features Mozart and Prokofiev sonatas, the virtuoso Ysaye Sonata for Solo Violin No 2, De Falla 'Suite Espagnole', Ravel's gypsy 'Tzigane' and Jack Body's 'Caravan'.

Nikki Chooi plays a 1729 Guarneri del Gesu. Nikki will be supported by Stephen De Pledge on piano.
