Japanese films shown at the University of Waikato are usually screened on the second or third Thursday of the month from 7:00pm.

All films have English subtitles.

February film " Éclair "
(Director: Akio Kondo, 2011, 107min. Rating: M, Cast: Hajime Yoshii, Saori, Ayumi Ishida )

2011 China Golden Rooster & Hundred Flowers Film Festival, Best Actor.

An emotional drama based on an autobiographical novel by Shigeru Nishimura. The resilience of ordinary people who survived the turbulent period during and after World War Ⅱis warmly depicted from the perspective of an orphaned boy named Akio who is obsessed with sweets.

In early Spring of 1943, Akio is caught for stealing sweets put of hunger. He is given a sweet bun by police detective Toyama, and experiences its deliciousness and human kindness for the first time in his life. He is eventually sent to a reformatory and goes through a tough time, but finds solace in the song “ Okashi to Musume ( Sweet and a girl)” sung by one of the teachers, Yoko.
