National Youth Theatre Company presents
The Wizard of Oz
Written by L. Frank Baum. Adapted by Frank Gabrielson.

It’s one of the most beloved family favourites that has stood the test of time – from the classic 1939 film version with Judy Garland, through to the many number of stage version, spin-offs and adaptations throughout the years. Now, the National Youth Theatre Company presents The Wizard of Oz, boasting one of their biggest casts, as it plays the ASB Theatre from June 6th – 7th.

Click your heels together and join Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion, Dorothy and her little dog Toto, as they journey through the magical land of Oz to meet the Wizard and obtain their heart’s desires. Watch out for the Wicked Witch of the West and her winged monkeys as you rediscover the real story of Oz in this fantastic musical treat for all the family!

It’s themes of family, friendship and how there “is no place like home” are timeless, and perfectly suited for the work of the National Youth Theatre Company. That the company promotes the ideas of bringing self-confidence and skills to young people much like, the Wizard did himself in the end, gives this production even more of a big heart.

Cue a cast of 200 of Auckland’s finest young performers (ages ranging from 6 to 19) as three different casts perform over the three day season, bringing to life the iconic moments and much-loved songs from Hubert Stothart’s Oscar winning score.

With rehearsals well underway, including a prosthetics workshop in which the cast members learn how to apply make up to become the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion or Witch. The mammoth task of working with these young people involves weekly practices alongside a three-day camp full of games and exercises designed not just to ensure a top-class performance of, but to also honour the NYTC’s goals:
- to nurture and encourage the talents of the students
- to encourage the establishment of a supportive group, while allowing individual talents to shine through
- to promote the enjoyment of music, dance and theatre throughout the community.
- to provide young people of Auckland with the opportunity to experience professional theatre
- to bring self-confidence and life skills to young people through the theatrical arts.

The National Youth Theatre Company is a charity devoted to bringing confidence and life skills to young people through the theatrical arts. Over the past decade they have produced a long series of successful musicals, including the 2007 sell-out High School Musical and the 2012 hit Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat.
