According to the philosopher James Carse life is comprised of at least two kinds of games. One is finite games, in which the object is to win and the other is infinite games in which the object is to keep the game in play.

Finite games have boundaries, include only select players and have rules that must not change for the duration of the game. In contrast infinite games have horizons that move as the player moves, welcome everyone into the game and the rules must change over time or the game will cease.

This workshop provides participants with an opportunity to experience playing an infinite game. It has a game-like structure and players will need to generate playing cards and populate a playing board. The object is for participants to experience the value of this metaphor in understanding current social structures that limit progress towards sustainability and the vital role that organisations, individuals and communities can play in promoting the conditions that will make it a reality.

We will also discuss the use of finite and infinite game language in helping formulate new symbols and ways of talking about the challenges we face and the possibilities for a flourishing future.

Interested participants will be provided with the materials necessary to facilitate infinite games in their own organisations or communities. They will also be invited to join a network of “infinite players” who want to continue exploring these concepts.
