New line up of Sponsors and Events for New Zealand’s 2014 Surf Festival
Key sponsors have signed up to support the 2014 NZ Surf Festival being staged in Taranaki from April 18 to May 4.

New Zealand Home Loans has taken naming rights to the overall Festival, and Port Taranaki has secured the 6-Star ASP Women’s Qualifying Series (QS) event.

Meanwhile Chain Resources has nabbed the ASP Junior Qualifying Series (JQS) events which will attract many of the world’s top Under 21 male and female competitors as well as New Zealand’s hottest young talent. Core funding support has also come from the TSB Community Trust and Venture Taranaki, and the festival will be presented by ZM, Marbles Buffet and the Devon Hotel.

The Port Taranaki Pro prize pool of $US40,000 will attract approximately 72 of the world’s highest ranked women surfers including many of the top competitors on the Samsung Galaxy ASP Women’s World Championship Tour (WCT) such as local Taranaki surfer, Paige Hareb.

Based at Fitzroy Beach, the New Zealand Home Loans Surf Festival kicks off with the New Plymouth Surfriders Club’s Fisher & Paykel Easter Masters. Now in its 22nd year, this event has become an institution for surfers aged over 30 and up to 75 from all over the country.

The Festival aims to provide as many surfers of all abilities and ages the opportunity to improve their skills, compete against their peers, and celebrate their passion for this sport. Following on from the Masters are Powerco Surf Coaching sessions for beginners, intermediate and advanced surfers.

These sessions will be run by local Taranaki surfing coach Daisy Day, and former ASP competitor and surf coach Matt Scorringe from Whangamata along with one of Aotearoa’s best surfers, Ricardo Christie from Gisborne - currently ranked 80th in the World on the ASP Qualification Series.

The advanced training sessions have been designed for young competitors to hone their skills for the following Surfing Taranaki Groms Interclub competition and the Rip Curl GromSearch New Zealand Surfing series event within the Festival.

For competitors, supporters and the public, the NZ Home Loans Surf Festival will be something even more action packed and exciting than previous years have been. From the Masters through to the GromSearch and the international ASP QS and JQS events, an incredible display of surfing will be on offer right here in Taranaki.

Timed to be held after the ASP WCT event at Bells Beach (Melbourne) and prior to the Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) stop on the international calendar, the ease of stopping off on the way in New Zealand to compete in the Port Taranaki Pro to gain valuable ASP QS points will be very attractive to the world’s best women surfers.

With entries not closing till April 1st, all three ASP competitions will most likely be over-subscribed. Competitors from 13 countries have already registered.
