The Art of NZ Music Month

While Kiwi music fills our airwaves and Kiwi bands play gigs up and down the country to celebrate NZ Music Month, Plimmerton’s Emerging Light Gallery is showcasing the art of New Zealand music somewhat differently.

The gallery has teamed up with artists and graphic designers to create an exhibition of the posters and CD covers that have promoted gigs and albums for a wealth of musical talent from all over New Zealand. The artworks are all on sale in the gallery until 4th June.

The advent of digital downloads, and fewer album sales means that the art is becoming less important – gone are the days of choosing or judging an album by its cover – but, as gallery owner Michael Bennington points out “these artists create images that go down in history – think Pink Floyd’s the Wall or Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures.”

The NZ Music month exhibition celebrates the often unsung heroes of music promotion and reflects the diversity of current New Zealand music.

Entry to the exhibition is free and features artworks promoting local bands John the Baptist, Beastwars, Oy Azoy and Kittentank.
