“The Mozart Quintet has been a living presence with me for more than 50 years, and after Campbell’s collaboration with the New Zealand String Quartet, I have no hope of hearing it played better.” Show Time Magazine

One of the most sublime ensemble combinations ever created – a clarinet quintet brings together a string quartet, in this case our very own New Zealand String Quartet, and clarinet, Canadian virtuoso James Campbell.

There is something about the clarinet that has inspired composers to soar to the absolute heights of their art. Brahms came out of retirement for the clarinet. Weber wrote his two greatest works. Mozart was so transfixed by the playing of Anton Stadler, the man who designed the modern instrument, that he wrote what would become the most exquisite utterances for winds – the concerto, the serenades, and this glorious quintet.

The New Zealand String Quartet and James Campbell are old friends, and have performed together extensively. James has a staggering history: he has performed in more than 30 countries, has recorded more than 40 landmark CDs, has worked with everyone from the Amadeus and Guarneri Quartets, to Aaron Copland and Glenn Gould. In 1997 he was made a Member of the Order of Canada and remains one of the “pre-eminent clarinet virtuosos” in the world.

In Napier, the concert programme features Brahms’ Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Mozart’s Quintet in A and a new New Zealand work for string quartet from 'The Travelling Portmanteau'.
