NZSM presents their 2014 Opera Scenes programme: an evening of staged scenes from a variety of operas and operettas – some well-known, others less so. The students will be directed by Frances Moore and accompanied by NZSM Accompaniment Coordinator Mark Dorrell.

The programme includes:

Benjamin Britten – Peter Grimes - Quartet
Gaetano Donizetti – Don Pasquale – Nocturne
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Die Zauberflöte – Padlock Scene and Scene from Act 2
Jacques Offenbach – Orpheus in the Underworld - Finale Act 1
Giacomo Puccini – La Bohème – Finale Act 2
Gioacchino Rossini – Il Barbiere di Siviglia – Finale Act 1
Stephen Sondheim – A Little Night Music – A Weekend in the Country - Part 1-7
Gilbert and Sullivan – The Mikado (three little girls and Poo-Bah)
Margaret Medlyn, NZSM’s Head of Classical Performance: Voice, emphasises the value of the production across the department’s teaching programme.

“On the one hand, staging scenes from several operas is a marvelous way to showcase our postgraduate students,” Margaret explains. “This year, for example, we can especially celebrate the recent successes of Christian Thurston who was placed third in the 2014 Lexus Song Quest. However, A Night At The Opera also provides the younger students with challenging but valuable performance opportunities in an intimate space by catering to a wider range of levels and abilities than our mainstage, full-scale operas.”

Seating is limited in the ACR to just 135 people per performance – Tickets are available through Eventfinda. There will be two performances of A Night At The Opera: last night, Friday 19 September and tonight, Saturday 20 September. With tonight also being New Zealand’s General Election day, the politically involved may prefer Friday's performance while the politically agnostic might choose to come this evening.
