David Farquhar (1928–2007) was one of New Zealand's most accomplished composers. He joined the staff at Victoria University's School of Music in 1953, was made a Professor of Music in 1976 and continued to teach there until his retirement in 1993.

This concert, held on the 7th anniversary of the composer's death, will feature a range of his chamber music works for piano, violin, voice and guitar. The concert, has been curated by Jack Body and will be introduced by Ross Harris, both fellow lecturers and colleague composers with David.

NZSM Lecturer in Piano Dr Jian Liu will take a major role in the concert, performing David's Sonatina for piano (1950) as well as 11 of the 20 works for solo piano from the four sets of 'black, white and coloured'. He will also accompany NZSM Head of Strings Assoc Prof Martin Riseley in Three Pieces for Violin and Piano as well as six of the nine movements from one of David's most enduringly popular works: Dance Suite from Ring Round the Moon, in its violin and piano version.

The concert will also include a performance of the seven Swan Songs for voice and guitar, performed here by NZSM Lecturers Jenny Wollerman (soprano) and Dr Jane Curry (guitar).

The concert is a prelude to a new recording project by Jack Body through Rattle Records. It is hoped that the CD of these works will be launched later this year.

Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music is a joint venture of Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington.
